Magic Theatre

Develop theater skills in a supportive ensemble-based workshop covering basic acting skills and the technical aspects of play production. Improvisation, movement, vocal work and cooperative learning will be explored in rehearsals for the musical play Magic Theatre and through age-appropriate monologues, personally selected for each actor. All students will be involved in a public performance of Magic Theatre at the culmination of the workshop.

Character & Scene Study

Grades 6-8

Find the fire inside you and bring it to the stage in the life of your characters. In this workshop students will focus on relaxation, voice work, movement, openness, connecting, committing and working together as an ensemble. Through character study and scene work, students will explore abridged versions of classical plays to be performed at the end of the session. Productions may include: Being Earnest, an abridged version of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, Akane, a manga-style Antigone, and Big Mac, based on Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Teen Theater Intensive

Grades 9-12

This intensive training program is perfect for high-school-age students who want to gain experience acting, directing, writing, choreography and stage composition. This class embodies the theater's high standards of conservatory acting training, providing a supportive environment that encourages both innovation and risk. The daily curriculum will include acting technique (Chekhov, Adler and Meisner), voice and speech, movement and Viewpoints (Anne Bogart) and will culminate in a public performance.

Gai Jones is the author of the theater text-book, Raising the Curtain, a director, actor, voice-over artist and credentialed professional Theater educator. Gai has created Sage to Stage: Acting for Senior Citizens and directs Theater for Youth in Ventura County. She also produces Theater 150's New Play Series

Eugenia Bostwick-Singer and Raymond Singer - actors/screenwriters - have been involved in the performing and screen arts for 25 years. Before they were award-winning screenwriters - Disney's Mulan, HBO's Iron-Jawed Angels, DreamWorks' Joseph among many others - they worked in regional theater Broadway and Off-Broadway acting, producing and directing. Their love of the theatre has led them to work with at-risk children in New York and Los Angeles and teach in local schools in Ojai and colleges throughout the country.

Judy Bauerlein is a Ph.D. candidate at UCSB and working as an acting Professor at universities in California and Florida. Bauerlein worked extensively as a performer in both regional and New York theaters. Credits include appearances at Williamstown Theater Festival, The Wilma Theatre, Lincoln Center Director's Lab, and UCSB Summer Lab.

Sam Mitchell teaches viewpoints, composition and choreography. He has over fifteen years of dance experience with Santa Barbara Dance Theatre, the Steve Hunter Ensemble in Walnut Creek, the Torque Dance Company in San Francisco and Improv Inc. in Santa Barbara.
